About this deal

MEET HANNA: Seven-year-old Hanna is a sweet-but-silent angel in the eyes of her adoring father Alex. Hanna pretended to be unaware of Suzette beside her, and she read the usual rebuke in Hanna's refusal to look at her. The very thought of it made her start shaking her head until Hanna twitched, glancing at her with a sour frown as if she was already stinking up the room.

Unlike the surfaces of her home, which she can scrub and polish until they are shiny and free from even the most minute imperfection, there is nothing she can do about the health issues that plague her and the developmental issues that manifest themselves in her daughter.Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. It’s no different than the Romans and gladiators and feeding them to the lions and everyone watching in the Colosseum. The Deepest Breath was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, won the Judges’ Special Award at the KPMG–Children’s Books Ireland Awards 2020 and was selected for the Read for Empathy reading list 2020. The only thing that really saves it is the Audible narration, which kept me invested, if for no other reason than to hear someone tell me a story while gardening.

The next day, without telling Hanna where they were going, they drove to the facility in rural Pennsylvania. For example - As Hanna’s behavior continues to escalate, she does something that incapacitates her mother, making Suzette largely defenseless against this proven-to-be-violent-if-not-homicidal child. This summer’s update, the propulsive debut novel “Baby Teeth,” by Zoje Stage, features an all-too-recognizable cast of contemporary characters: an architect dad with a hipster beard, a stay-at-home mother who opted out of work she loved to take care of her increasingly difficult daughter. I didn’t really see the point of the reams of writing that focused on Suzette’s fear of her own Crohn’s disease. You're either locked on or repulsed (or you want to scream at the DUH-ness exhibited by the husband).

Most free hours are spent crocheting with my cat (in his presence - he sadly does not crochet), reading, and writing reviews. I sometimes listen to more than one book at once and jump back and forth depending on my mood, but this one had me hooked all the way through. For perfectionistic Suzette, her battle with Crohn’s and Hanna’s clearly abnormal development are particularly troubling. Absolutely unforgettable and unflinching, it digs right into the painful nerve of family, obligation and dependence—it's a hell of a debut. What I Disliked: The ending while I will say the ending worked it is a whimper of an ending when I was expecting a bang. Suzette had come to believe that their mother-daughter relationship would improve only when they had some distance — when Hanna went off to school.

I'll just say that if you have any trust issues with people close to you, you probably shouldn't read it. Only her husband, Alex, gave her the out she needed to embrace life again, and only he can continue to give her the hope to move forward. He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before. Rather, at the heart of this genre is a set of conventional beliefs about the relationship between mothers and children — beliefs that persist today, belying the lip service we pay to gender equality. She left Hanna with a book and decided to clean the bathroom, a coping mechanism for stress that she had developed as a teen. The weird noises two streets over are a little quieter, and a little weirder, when muffled by the snow. It didn’t bother her as much as it did Swedish-born Alex, who, after nineteen years in the United States, still couldn’t accept that Americans would never make a J sound like a Y. She had worked as an interior designer, but after marrying him and becoming pregnant, she quit to become a stay-at-home mother.
