About this deal

The watch offers information about this metric to help you interpret your data. It says that most people have a blood oxygen level between 95 and 100 percent. The first time I used this feature, the Series 6 said my blood oxygen saturation level was 99 percent. The second time I took a reading, it was after a three-mile beach run, and I was happy to see my SpO2 level was 100 percent. We'd rather there was an option for just a very, very dimly-glowing set of numbers for the time – we don't want to see the whole watch face, just a little view of the time that's not distracting. Apple Watch 6 blood oxygen monitor In 2018, Apple moved to a new size standard for its smartwatches. So Series 4 - 6, and, crucially, both the 2020 and 2022 versions of the Apple Watch SE, come in 40mm and 44mm models.

Put shortly: the Apple Watch 6 was the company's most refined wearable to date, but there isn't enough new here that may merit upgrading. On the other hand, the Apple Watch 7 doesn't improve on much besides a 20% larger screen and brighter always-on display. Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, the Watch 7 doesn't include any new health sensors or features, so you're not missing much by opting for the slightly older Apple Watch 6 instead. One thing we haven’t mentioned is the use of cellular data with your Apple Watch. The amount of times you’ll need it are limited – having the ability to have Siri with you when your phone isn’t, or to make a call, or listen to an Apple Music playlist is nice, but the extra cost of the data plan is less appealing. The watch uses data from the barometric pressure sensor, GPS, and nearby Wi-Fi networks to determine your exact location and update your elevation on the fly. You can also add your elevation as a complication on the watch face.Placing the Watch higher up our arm helped with the accuracy (as it’s easier for the sensor to read the pulse through the skin here), but it wasn’t comfortable and fell forwards eventually. The Series 6 uses similar technology as a pulse oximeter—the device they clip onto your finger at the doctor's office—to measure your blood oxygen saturation. Its SpO2 sensor shines red and infrared light through your skin, onto the blood vessels of your wrist, and measures the color of your blood, which indicates the amount of oxygen present. Bright red blood is more saturated, and dark red blood is less so. Changes in your body or elevation can impact your blood oxygen level.

The fit of your watch is a fairly subjective thing, but it’s important to know just how big your wrist is before buying the Apple Watch or an additional band. As ever, battery life on a new Apple Watch is strange. Once again, we regularly got far longer than the advertised 18 hours between charges, usually hitting around 28-30 hours before needing to reach for the charging cable. Charge times are from 0–80% and 0–100% using the included Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charging USB-C Cable. Testing conducted by Apple in August 2023 using preproduction Apple Watch Series 9 (GPS) and Apple Watch Series 9 (GPS + Cellular), each paired with an iPhone; all devices tested with prerelease software, Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charging USB-C Cable (Model A2515), and Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter (Model A2305). Charge time varies with region, settings, and environmental factors; actual results will vary. Irregular rhythm notification requires the latest version of watchOS and iOS. It is not intended for use by people under 22 years old or those who have been previously diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF). Apple Watch Series 1 has a water resistance rating of IPX7 under IEC standard 60529. Apple Watch Series 1 is splash and water resistant, but submerging it is not recommended.

Well-Being on Your Wrist

Apple Watch Series 8 (45mm): 44 x 38 x 10.7mm; 38.8g (Aluminium, GPS, GPS + Cellular); 51.5 grams (Stainless Steel) The final thing we tried was the Watch App Store, to see if it had progressed in the last year. In some ways it has, with there being more Apple Watch apps available than ever – but the opening screen of the App Store on the Watch makes you feel like there’s not much there. Apple Watch Series 9 has a water resistance rating of 50 metres under ISO standard 22810:2010. This means that it may be used for shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool or ocean. However, Apple Watch Series 9 should not be used for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other activities involving high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth. Water resistance is not a permanent condition and can diminish over time. For additional information, see support.apple.com/en‑gb/HT205000. However, combined with the ability to take an ECG and monitor your heart's regular output, it's still a comfort, and those with heart conditions would probably still gravitate towards the Watch 6 as a result. The first time you open the Blood Oxygen app on the watch, it takes you through some helpful tips to get a good reading. Apple says your watch band should be snug but comfortable, and to make sure the watch isn't too low on your wrist. You should keep the watch facing up and try not to move during the reading. Resting your arm on a table can help. A subscription is required for Oceanic+. Available on the App Store. Always follow diving protocols, and dive with a companion and have a secondary device. While the band of any Apple Watch is changeable and adjustable, the size of the case itself is crucial to get right before purchasing. But before we get to that, let's just remind ourselves what a blood oxygen (or SPO2) sensor actually does. Firing red and infra-red light under the skin, the diodes on the underside of the Apple Watch 6 can read the color of your blood, and work out from that how much oxygen you're pumping around. Charge times are from 0–80% and 0–100% using the included Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charging USB-C Cable. Testing conducted by Apple in August 2023 using preproduction Apple Watch Ultra 2 (GPS + Cellular) paired with an iPhone; all devices tested with prerelease software, Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charging USB-C Cable (Model A2515), and Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter (Model A2305). Charge time varies with region, settings, and environmental factors; actual results will vary. For the Apple Watch Series 7, Series 8, and the new Series 9, things are different once again. Both of these generations come in 41mm and 45mm case sizes, while the Apple Watch Ultra (and Ultra 2) is the biggest Apple Watch yet, taking up 49mm on the wrist. In fairness, this must be an incredibly hard feature to get to work well – the Watch has to listen for the specific sound of running water at the same time as detecting a very specific hand motion, so it’s actually quite impressive that it works as often as it does.
