This was a really lovely and easy read, holding my attention even though I’m not usually one for poetry books. You will realize that Tolkien's works contain some Smith ideas or feelings that are represented in the poems of this book, this might be because the author of those poems, G.

We start the day with the Big Start all-age bonanza, followed by two different in-depth Bible teaching sessions taking you up until lunch. Knowing of Geoffrey Bache Smith from watching the Tolkien biography I expected the poems to reflect the themes of the age: the hopes of youth; young love; the power of the Arts; English mythology and ultimately the pain of loss and the ravages of war. It was an act of kindness and well as tribute, and it speaks to the young man Tolkien was and the man he remained. Application must be made by a church leader or group organiser and the church must offer some support. I was swept up in language achingly luminous and sat in silent awe at the end of some of them ("O, Sing Me a Song of the Wild West Wind," for example).We [as churches in Shetland] could arrange our own activities during the afternoon… and come together for it.

Smith wrote formal poetry, squarely in the “Edwardian” tradition that was prevalent among the war poets, the group of young men who poetry published during and after the war helped to frame a generation’s understanding of the war. Have a mournful tone of loss, of losing something that has become too distant to hear, but it is there still, for those who take the time to listen. Like so many others, I picked this up after seeing the movie, Tolkien, and wanting to read more by his charismatic and close friend. Sadly, Smith died during WWI, but if the movie is to be believed, it was due to Tolkien’s persistence and devotion to his friend, even after his death, that this collection of Smith’s poems ever reached a wider audience, for which I am grateful. Tolkien was impressed by Smith's poems and felt the poetry would be a great help to English society as it recovered from the Great War. His poetry takes you through his days at Oxford, his friendships, his longings, the First World War, losing a friend, and everything in between. For Smith life seemed a mix of things, and he spoke mostly of nature, of old things, set against the new. Every year our Spring Harvest family expands as a huge team of people in a variety of roles bring Spring Harvest to life.We’ve answered some popular technology questions in the hope that everyone will feel confident in joining us online at Spring Harvest Home 2023 between 10th - 14th April. I recommend the book, but even more so the movie, as it provides a background for what you are about to read. The way the poems appear in the book is very interesting, as it seems as if they were following a narration, not a story, but as if the reader was walking through the path of life: the imagination (creation), growing up (represented in nature theme poems), and death (in those that were about war).
