About this deal

Besides, at times I got the distinct suspicion that CM has read "Neverwhere" by Neill Gaiman, and fell in love with that grand idea of a supernatural London (as well as some concepts from Gaiman's "American Gods" which I felt strangely reminded of as well ) sketched there by one of the genres masters.

It's just that it in NO WAY measures up to the usual amazing and brain-popping experience I came to expect from CM.Of course, Miéville actually takes his cults-as-normal conceit a step further and has them all mix and associate. His is a strong, intelligent, and literate vision of the growing and popular subgenre of modern-day magic. It's like a nigh-bursting armoury of beloved keepsakes, the doors of which the readers inadevertently opens - getting buried, suffocating under the content for his curiosity.

It’s not that it just doesn’t feel odd enough (there is that) … it doesn’t have the same twisted depths of personal injustice. It would make more sense for the villain to try to create the God of his childhood, but this would highlight another weakness of the setting: if believing in things give them power, shouldn’t the major world religions be producing effects infinitely more powerful than tiny cults and minor criminals? Bottom-line, this is an experience book, where the journey through clever, gorgeous prose is worth a few scratches of head and the beauty and majesty of the commentary more than outweighs the periodic moments of stunned confusion.Mieville es inventivo, a veces sorprendentemente pero su estilo en la trama y los diálogos lo vuelven cansino, denso y la trama se volvió aburrida en un batiburrillo de personajes y sectas que se pasa de rosca. It’s such a topical, contemporary way to learn the lore and pick up those darker arts, and Miéville doesn’t make a big deal about it.

Until I've read this again (and maybe again) I will continue to believe that my befuddlement is entirely my fault and China Mieville has done precisely what he set out to do. One day this prize specimen is stolen and the biologist who was responsible for studying it finds himself investigated by the police, named as the prophet of a cult of squid-worshipers, and pursued by a mostly disembodied underworld kingpin.

Seriously, this is the first time in my Miéville-reading experience (6 books, a few short stories) that I felt the pacing was poorly done. He’s leading a tour group when they discover the star attraction–a perfectly preserved specimen of a thirty-foot giant squid–has disappeared without a trace.

Recommended for Miéville’s existing fans and those looking for a gritty, darkly comic urban fantasy. Perhaps you won’t be surprised to learn that a book that features an undersea leviathan and “the sea” as a character also includes an abundance of red herrings.Like Neverwhere, the normal everyday guy protagonist finds himself pulled into a parallel London where the supernatural is commonplace. This plunges Billy into a surreal experience involving squid cultists, unionized familiars, and living tattoos. Characters range from a union leader whose consciousness jumps between statues and dolls to a pair of villains that resemble some of the nightmare comic creations of the Mighty Boosh.
