About this deal

Autofocus is fast, partly because the Nikon 1 cameras have an excellent AF system, and partly because the fast aperture allows for better focus accuracy. Yes, this is better than overexposing, but it seems like a silly problem to have in this day and age.

The lens also has some longitudinal chromatic aberration, but not enough to get worried about most of the time (see next). As the light goes down this lens is not going to suddenly turn the V3 or other Nikon 1 into a low-light master. The Nikon 1 camera has a small one-inch sensor that you must multiply a given lens focal length by 2.and f/4 since these are the most common apertures that people would want to use this and we’ll see the most changes happen with these values.

the engineering guys seem to have done their homework well and then it looks to me like the marketing guys came in and messed up everything big time. The iris has 7-blades which are curved so the iris stays round and not angular which helps in giving a nice, smooth character to its bokeh.Lesser sensors even at iso 100 have this coarse look about it, like dense coarse sand that will disperse unevenly and unattractively.

Some reviewers wrote hopefully about an anticipated enthusiast-oriented V4, the presumed successor to 2014’s V3. It isn’t the best tool for taking photos of architecture or anything that requires straight lines to remain straight. The lens has a marked potential for purple fringing, which can be pretty intense on high-contrast edges when wide open. If you want exhaustive image quality details, go back to some of the contemporary reviews (but don’t start at DPreview, which passed on the camera — maybe they smelled the stink of death on it).

This photo reminded me a lot of my old Fujifilm X20 in the sense that it looks rather “flat”, making it look a bit cheap.

When you over expose the shadows and then enlarge a bit in PP, you can see how any sensor performs, the lbetter sensors hold the “grain or pixel clusters” better. is a nice prime lens that delivers very high sharpness, at least in the aperture range that is not penalized by diffraction (f/1. As an interesting side note; both Panny with their GF3KK and Nikon V1 both came out with designs panned by the media and within the same year both made substantial changes to their design to appease them. To tell the truth, when it comes to low light shooting, I leave the M at home and take either the Nikon 1 with 10 – 30 or my EM-5 with a Panasonic prime. Maybe Nikon already knew that there’d be no V4 and positioned the J5 to have something for everyone.

model, part of this can be attributed to the lower-pixel count of the Nikon 1 V1 sensor but, in reality, the lens is no sharper than the firm’s zoom. I’ve seen complaints about slow shot-to-shot times in reviews, but I think it’s really this pinch point that’s bothering people — the camera can take pictures about as fast as you can mash the button).
