About this deal

The Dice Game comes with five dice, a deck of a few different types of cards, and cardboard arrow and bullet tokens. It’s not much of a game for spectators, which is a problem, but since you’re mostly done with a full go in about fifteen minutes it’s not something I’d particularly worry about.

The insight is either brazenly obvious (deputies shovelling available heals into a sheriff’s open wounds) or lacking the evidentiary rigour to be definitive. On a turn, a player can roll the five dice up to three times, using the results of the dice to shoot neighbouring players, increase the range of his shots, heal his (or anyone else's) life points, or put him in range of the Indians, which are represented by nine tokens in the center of the table. The dice chucking part of the game is great, so long as you don’t mind a fair dollop of luck with your games. The Bullet comes with a shiny Sheriff’s badge for the Sheriff, and it’s kind of unfortunate that there’s no similar thing for Dice Game owners. It’s certainly possible to play with support in most circumstances for visually impaired players, and the totally blind can make use of other workarounds for their hidden roles. There's even some pushing of your luck as you decide whether to chance arrows or dynamite by rerolling. The rating of a game in terms of its accessibility is not an indication as to its quality as a recreational product.

Unless you get eliminated early, in which case it’s a bit irritating because you have to wait about 15 minutes. In good old fashioned yahtzee style, if you don’t like what you’ve got, you can reroll up to twice before settling on your decision. You’re going to be deceiving your opponents and making sure you end up the last gunslinger on their feet. The dice themselves are really nice, we’ve all been fairly spoiled with custom dice in games over the last few years but these still stand out. When the arrow supply is depleted, the Indians attack, inflicting damage on each player equal to the number of arrow counters they possess.

The only real sure thing is that most of you are going to want to shoot at the sheriff and it feels quite unfair to be in that position, especially during those player-count scenarios that the internal balancing doesn’t kick in. Dynamite: This can’t be re-rolled and if you end up with a 3rd dynamite, that your turn ends immediately and you lose one life point. If you take the last arrow token, all players discard their arrow tokens and take one point of damage per arrow token. It’s also thematic enough and funny enough that most people will have fun with it, so it might also appeal to people who aren’t traditionally as passionate about board/tabletop games. While not without some problems, the game is loads of fun and filled with great Old West atmosphere.
