I was annoyed with how often the fans, the Ark, Angel and Juliet used the word love, making it almost meaningless. Many stars seem to go down that road and it makes me really sad whenever I hear that they ended up in rehab.The whole book is about finding out who you are through your love of a boyband, a feeling that I know all too well. This book was also so relatable; it was almost like looking into a mirror and seeing an alternate version of me. Music is a part of me and the people that make the music I adore are ultimately a part of me as well. Alice Oseman effortlessly and joyfully brings these characters and others to life, treating her subjects - and the subject matter - with compassion and non-judgement, while discussing questions of friendship, teenage identity, fandom and online friendships.

Angel finally gets chance to see the band live when she meets up with her online friend of two years, Juliet. Oseman manages to powerfully portray emotion without romanticising things, which is why I think this book hit me so hard. We went through thick and thin and even though our band doesn’t exist anymore (he moved to Germany) and we both have a family and lives that keep us busy, we’re still close and stay in contact.

Rowan’s girlfriend, Bliss, has got to be my favorite character - she is the hilarious icon I needed in my life, and her arc around her relationship with Rowan is fantastic. Sure, this is not a new theme, it has surely been talked about before, but these distinct two voices are a powerful addition. Neither of us have any friends in real life who like The Ark, but that doesn’t matter, because we have each other. There were a few things in the book that I feel were done outstandingly (admittedly that I wasn’t expecting).
