You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. From the exaggerated machismo of Lagosian men to the absurdity of social media influencers, nothing escapes Kuku's hilarious scrutiny. So, it is not surprising when a man dates a woman for years, treating her as his one and only, while being secretly married to a woman he respects enough to keep away from his concubine.

I also found it amusing how you can pretty much replace Lagos with Lilongwe and the message remains the same. I have to say I really like Damilare's writing style and I definitely can't wait to read more from her in the future. The forever downtrodden and humiliated wives/girlfriends take their revenge and we hear about all kinds of horrible things the men do. If for any reason you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, we will happily exchange or refund your items within 14 days of receipt, as long as it is sent back to us in its original condition, this includes original packaging. You liked me so much I had no choice but to start liking myself, to start acting respectable, like someone who had something special waiting for them back home. While the story was written in a way to shine the light of blame on Nancy for leaving her faithful boyfriend for a life of extravagance being with Femi provided her, Femi shouldn’t come out unscathed. Some were really enjoyable such as Catfish (messy as hell), Ode-Pus Complex (madness) and Cuck-Up (also mad). The last time I came this close to a book filled with such enormous amounts of humour was when I read Becoming Nigerian by Elnathan John.

Meeting him again must have brought back the memory of the seemingly pedophile act that closed her off to having anything to do with him as an adult. The polygamous inclinations of African men are deeply explored in this book, as is their propensity to find logic in double-standards. All in all, captivating read, very Nigerian, and funny in some places, also very sad if you're the sort to think about it. Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad is a collection of twelve short stories featuring characters with unique voices and stories that represent the diverse class, gender and ethnic melting pot that is Lagos.Kuku's writing style is delightfully irreverent, and he fearlessly tackles taboo subjects with a touch of satire. Please note, we cannot guarantee these will be safe from any damage that may occur on their journey to you. Short stories are always a good start to get off a reading slump or ease you out of the state that heavy books leave you in. A girl who drugs men to steal from them, a supposed virgin who cheats on her boyfriend with other men, a woman who hates her son and husband, and a Lagos big girl who cheats on her boyfriend with a ‘Yahoo boy’ who ends up cheating on her. I also thought it could have benefited from a further edit, and from more variety in the narrative styles/ voices.

What I didn't like about the book is that because of the title and the entire premise of the short-story collection, you knew how every story was going to end with a man breaking a woman's heart. Out of all the stories my favorite may be the Beard Gang or Sidelined only because of the craziness of the whole thing. That should not have been comfortable for her and anyone in her shoes would have done the right thing by reporting it to the school authorities.

Nearly All the Men in Lagos are Mad is a short story collection written by Nigerian author and actress Damilare Kuku.

Noting that the cause of infertility in the marriage is a result of the woman’s irresponsible lifestyle in her youth, the author then reveals that the man has tried his best not to cheat on her when he already brought in an official third party into the marriage. The stereotype of pointing fingers at the woman as being responsible for infertility in marriages finds its way into this novel as well. Lagos of the Mad: Review of Damilare Kuku's Nearly all the Men in Lagos are Mad | Melony Akpoghene". I finish all my books because when it comes to books I am optimistic, it may surprise me or end up being good ,there's always light at the end of a tunnel but this book, My very first DNF crushed that hope. As a woman of African origin, I've heard all these crazy stories about men betraying the women they claim to love and respect.I wished some of the stories had more depth to them but overall I would recommend this to anyone who is in a reading rut and looking for a good laugh! Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad underscores with wit, humour, wisdom and sensitivity, the perils of trying to find lasting love and companionship in Africa’s most notorious city. Before picking up this book, I'd already known that Lagos men are really not okay in the head 😂 These stories (fictional, yes yes, I know) just confirm that.
