About this deal

Fade to the opening credits, the film switches gears in a complete 180, introducing us to Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) and her young children Bridget (Gabrielle Echols), Danny (Morgan Davies) and Kassie (Nell Fisher) trying to cope with Ellie’s husband leaving them. Disc 1 is just the UK PAL version of the US NTSC Book Of The Dead DVD as above, but the bonus disc contains the open matte version of The Evil Dead, which is the same transfer as was used on the earlier Anchor Bay 1-5 picture disc DVD releases, and has the zooming editing tweak as previously mentioned.

Speech is far more uniform - there's still a lot of discrepancies, you couldn't possibly eradicate them all, but they seem a lot fewer and further between, and certainly less bothersome. Slade offers us a nice little anecdote about watching the film for the first time during the Video Nasty scaremongering days, but he swiftly becomes a genuine prat when he goes into Bruce Campbell “chin-mode” and then never seems to recover. But with ambiance and tone established early on, 'The Evil Dead' makes for a great and exciting horror feature. Although renowned for their spectacular spontaneity and sheer hilarity on other tracks, the trio, here, are far more restrained. Sadly, this release ditches the original mono sound as well, meaning that neither release carried that option, but the surround mix has been so carefully thought out and well presented that it is certainly no hardship to enjoy it.

Additionally there is also quite a difference in picture framing between this, and all the other versions.I’m not going to go full on Charlie Day here and make over the top tie ins to prove how every one of the films are connected, but there are distinct hints that make you wonder just HOW connected to the originals each of the newer ones are. Not only the primaries - ie, the red blood - but the autumnal shades of the leaves and the trees and the distant mountains that we see at the start.

But, barring Spiegel (who would end as one of the infamous “Fake Shemps” on the production), the ensemble are merely filmmakers who just followed the bloody flag of Raimi and strove forth to create their own micro-budgeted horrors. It also comes with an extras disc in DVD format, although there is no previously unreleased material here as all the extras have been lifted from the 2007 US Anchor Bay Ultimate Edition 3-disc DVD. This offers a smart insight into how low budget independent horror films find distribution and the gambles that are made and the tricks that are pulled. Purists may prefer to watch the film in its original theatrical format, though the director himself has said that he prefers the 1. The great clout as Scotty thunks the axe into her and immediately drops her to the deck has always been quite satisfying, but just you listen to the clarity of the juicy body-parts jittering messily on the floor now!Sprays of blood and dashes of gore are perfect companions for outlandish action and hilarious one-liners, but watch out for when Ash vs Evil Dead truly flexes its horror muscles, you’ll jump out of your skin!
