About this deal

Here’s a look at what’s on the horizon for the maiden journey of Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea. There are plenty of giveaways up for grabs as part of the Dog Man Day festivities—here’s a sampling: In college, Dav met a teacher who encouraged him to write and illustrate for kids. He took her advice and created his first book, World War Won, which won a national competition in 1986. Dav made many other books before being awarded the California Young Reader Medal for Dog Breath (1994) and the Caldecott Honor for The Paperboy (1996). At the same time, Dog Man is also the comic book creation of George Beard and Harold Hutchins, the fictional lead characters of Pilkey’s earlier Captain Underpants series. In fact, Dog Man actually initially appeared as a comic strip inside the ninth book in the Captain Underpants series. So… Dog Man is actually a fictional story inside a fictional story and… perhaps it’s best to not think about this too much, really. Dav's stories are semi-autobiographical and explore universal themes that celebrate friendship, empathy, and the triumph of the good-hearted.

A few nights ago, my grandson wasn't feeling well. And he asked me to read aloud the Dogman book he was halfway through. Oh, man. Not my genre, not my age group. But I'll do it. Holy Cow. It was funny and thoughtful and so topical! One character was wondering if he'd ever get past his bad reputation from the past. The villain was persuading some not-so-bright henchmen that the way to make people happy was to scare them, and then make them angry. And the media! Oh, the comments on The Media. Yet for all it was saying to me, for Felix it was still a very engaging story.Scholastic revealed the official cover of Cat Kid Comic Club: Influencers on June 14, 2023, and the announcement of Dog Man With Love: The Official Coloring Book, releasing on August 1, 2023. On the same day, TheaterWorks USA announced the Cast Members of Cat Kid Comic Club: The Musical, including Lora Rachel Davidson, Jamie LaVerdiere and Brian Owen of Dog Man: The Musical. Scholastic Book Fairs, in partnership with the Scripps Howard Fund, will distribute free copies of Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea, to 25,000 students and teachers in Title 1 schools. The giveaway is part of the Fund’s “If You Give a Child a Book…” literacy campaign, which provides free book fairs for low-income students in The E.W. Scripps Company’s 41 markets around the U.S. The Fund is a leader in supporting childhood literacy, journalism education, and community giving. The free book giveaway to underserved students is made possible by and courtesy of Dav Pilkey. When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day.

Piggy is enjoying freedom, but it is short lived as Crunky and Bub join him, singing the Friendly Friends theme song to the tune of Jingle Bells. Piggy silenced them, as they have found Dog Man, asleep under the tree with Chief and Nurse Lady. He whispers instructions to exact revenge, but Crunky never heard and yells, waking Dog Man who chases them. They fly into a sandwich shop called “The Beach” where Daryl and his Uncle Larry opened a headquarters, which Piggy will use for evil. Robot Roz undertakes an unusual ocean journey to save her adopted island home in this third series entry. The publisher is also encouraging retailers Barnes & Noble, Indigo, Books-a-Million, and independent bookstores to host Dog Man Day celebrations to bring communities and families together to promote reading. To help attendees to get in the spirit, multiple Dog Man costumed characters will make appearances at major venues and conventions throughout the year. Fans can find information about Dog Man Day events near them here . Piggy is in awe of the laboratory because Uncle Larry is a genius. Piggy is further selfish, not showing appreciation at all. He falls in love with a big submarine, thinking it is for himself alone, but is angry to be joined by the gang. The submarine is equipped with shrinking machine “Size-O-Tron” and it goes outside, soon growing Supa Big, and Sarah Hatoff and Dog Man have to go in pursuit when they saw the growing size of the flying submarine. The sub shrinks down to normal, Chief and Nurse Lady rejoin, everyone works the rest of the day to start restoration of Petey’s Lab. By night, everyone heads over to Dog Man’s house for supper. Petey still doesn’t know why everyone is helping him, a jailbird. Li’l Petey says it is why they are there to help each other. Sarah dips her feet in the water of the lake (which Petey presumably cleaned of pollution) and makes it an analogy about giving more in life. Sarah once again teaches the lesson better than Petey. The characters are seen walking home through the view of the lake.

Zooming into Piggy’s nose, the submarine is smashed and resting on the cusp of a sweat gland. Uncle Larry asks if everyone is okay. He diagnoses the situation, as the submarine slides into the gland, with gross liquid at the bottom. Molly panics, asking the obvious if they could just grow big again, but it won’t. Crunky and Bub say goodbye again, but 80-HD shoots his arms up and holds the submarine suspended above the water by a large hair follicle. Uncle Larry says someone has to dive into the stinky water to fetch the lost propeller, to which Dog Man goes in, followed by Li’l Petey and Molly. Everyone now must work to fix the sub. As the three friends get the propeller, they awake a Mite at the bottom of the sweat. On May 6th “Free Comic Book Day,” comic bookstores will be giving away copies of a free comic featuring characters from both Dog Man and Captain Underpants series.
