About this deal

This book follows The Burning Chambers, and in my opinion, it is better. The story follows the Joubert family and the saga of their lives. The family have settled in the South of A gorgeously written, utterly absorbing epic and, despite being set in the sixteenth century, has some very pertinent messages for our time about the evils of religious persecution and the transcendent power of love and family. In case it’s not clear enough yet, I absolutely LOVED it - Lucy Foley, author of The Hunting Party For fans of juicy historical fiction, this one might just develop into their next obsession."

This starts with the assassin François Ravaillac killing the King Henri IV thus set in motion once again the Huguenots hunt. Kate Mosse is a master storyteller who brings historical fictional drama to life like few others, delivered with an enthralling pace that rarely falters, and a depth that is truly impressive. The family dynamics are intelligently crafted to add another dimension in this absorbing novel and the narrative uses emotional forces that are so ranging that my head and heart have been sated for some time. Mosse’s fans will relish this tale of secrets, love and treachery - The Times on The Burning ChambersReading this book made me once again realize that organized religion can and did often bring its share of grief, loss of life, and hardship to the people. It certainly should never be the intention of any religion to place itself above another's beliefs, but that has unfortunately happened down through the ages. Certainly, in this book, the second in The Burning Chambers series, those concepts have been once again been brought to light. Impressively bold and ambitious, it features betrayals, broken friendship, family secrets and the horrors of fanaticism. Fans will love it * Daily Mail *

Authentic, absorbing, tense, chilling and powerful. However, the 4.5 is because of the characterisation. I would like Mosse to have focused as much on the characters development as she did on the historical context, allowing us inside the head of the characters.Mosse is a master storyteller, balancing thrilling suspense with complex characters and a thoughtful exploration of a fascinating time in history. Her heroine Minou is a pleasure to root for: clever, loving, down-to-earth and courageous! - Madeline Miller, author of The Song of Achilles and Circe Mosse has also written introductions to reissues of a number of works of fiction and non-fiction including Writers' & Artists Yearbook 2009, Captain Blood by Rafael Sabatini, We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, Goldfinger by Ian Fleming, Night Falls on the City by Sarah Gainham, A Chichester Miscellany by Phil Hewitt, Chichester Harbour: England's Coastal Gem by Liz Sagues, One Hundred Great Plays by Women by Lucy Kerbel. Her first play, Syrinx, was part of the SkyArts Theatre Live project, devised by Sandi Toksvig. First performed in July 2009, it won a broadcasting press publicity award that same year. Mosse's second play Endpapers was part of the Bush Theatre's 2011 project Sixty-Six Books. [9] Her monologue was inspired by the Book of Revelation, the final book in the Bible. Kate Mosse’s writing is as beautiful and engrossing as ever and you really feel like you are there on breathtaking adventures with Louise and her crew. You can feel the wind in your hair, smell the salty seas and hear the roar of the waves so vividly creating such magnificent imagery. The historical research is meticulously done surrounding this fascinating time period.
