About this deal

Mike Krzyzewski: I probably shouldn’t say this, but I was not much of a book person. I loved to learn, but I learn by doing. I learn from my experiences. There’s an expression, “ants in your pants.” I couldn’t sit down long enough to get involved. I’m still not a great reader, but my wife is and my daughters are, and I envy them. I think I got into a bad habit of trying to do something all the time, instead of trying to sit down and take my time a little bit.

I tell my players, “A basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you can get them all together, you have a fist. That’s how I want you to play.” If, when we lose I say, “You didn’t do a good job,” there’s no fist. Collective responsibility is saying, “We lost. Why did we lose, and how can we get better?” If we can do that, an amazing thing happens. So, I'll say I really enjoyed the book! I got some good stuff out of it - especially the dialogue in our book club. But ... I will add a couple of "digs" on the coach. In ’91, we were playing Nevada Las Vegas, and they’d won 45 in a row. It was almost like it would be okay to lose. Everybody would say, “Oh, that’s all right.” That, to me, was the biggest obstacle. I was most proud of that game, because, as a leader, I helped my group overcome rationalization at the highest level. When we beat them, and then beat Kansas for the National Championship, everyone was saying, “Boy, you won the National Championship,” but for me, it was amazing because I got over that final hurdle, as a leader and a teacher. Now I know how to do that, and I thought it helped me the next year when we won it a second time. Solid. A helpful and/or enlightening book, in spite of its obvious shortcomings. For instance, it may offer decent advice in some areas while being repetitive or unremarkable in others.Lastly, I was particularly taken by Coach K’s chapter on character: “The Core of Character,” where he touched upon continual learning, hard work, honesty, and integrity. His primary and final tip in that chapter: “Make the truth the basis of all you do.” Brilliant. A helpful and/or enlightening book that, in addition to meeting the highest standards in all pertinent aspects, stands out even among the best. Often an instant classic and must-read for everyone. Put others first, not just employees, but vendors and customers. This means looking at the bigger picture and how your decisions will impact others, especially long-term relationships. Avoid making decisions solely on the immediate monetary return. Good. A helpful and/or enlightening book that combines two or more noteworthy strengths, e.g. contains uncommonly novel ideas and presents them in an engaging manner. Develop a corporate giving program which funds local charities or organizes giving events that encourage employee participation. Allow employees time off to volunteer.

Quite enjoyable! I love basketball and coaching, so this book was right up my alley! Coach K really is an amazing person! He has accomplished so much and he did it with heart and working with people. Don't be discouraged if you find some insistency, for change can happen. Leaders can become more intentional with their actions for developing this style of leadership. Below are some strategies for leading with the heart:He served as an officer in the army from 1969-1974. In 1980, Krzyzewski was made head coach of Duke University‘s basketball team.
