About this deal

We think the phone looks stylish and love that it has a distinctive feel – it's more unique than the Samsung S23, but more practical to use on a daily basis than Androids like the Galaxy Fold or the Oppo Find N2 Flip. There’s been little change from the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on the camera front, at least where hardware is concerned.

On the actual hardware itself, the Pixel sports the same combination of a 50MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide. That main camera will be the go-to option and it delivers excellent results, while there's a telephoto setting that uses the central portion of the big sensor. The Pixel 7a also complicates things by including many of the features from the Pixel 7 at a lower cost. It'll give you a slightly lower battery life than the 7 but we think it is the best budget option for many people, especially if you'd prefer a smaller screen. Google Pixel 7 verdict Google boasts about faster performance for low-light photos, the "unblur" feature to fix dodgy snaps and better on-device speech recognition (we tried its transcribing feature and that's also superb). We like the simple menu layout – you’ll choose between 0.5x, 1x, 2x, and 5x zoom and six modes (night, motion, portrait, camera, video and cinematic). On the far right menu you access Google Lens, which is used to translate languages from text on the fly via the camera – that’ll help with reading the bar or restaurant menu on your next holiday. Translating text and voices is speedy and accurate.

Google’s Tensor chips are more about machine learning smarts than raw performance, however, and the company has introduced features such as Clear Calling, which promises to use AI to make the person on the other end of a call sound clearer on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. These cases from Mous have been certified as specially made for Google, and offer protection for your smartphone that is truly unrivaled. We recently reported on howMous cases are so protective, that the brand decided to prove the strength of its cases by throwing a Google Pixel 7 off the roof at Google HQ, and the device emerged totally unharmed, protected with a Mous case, and without a scratch on it. Magic Eraser mode is used to remove small unwanted details from photos, too, and it works just as well as the previous models. It’s very good at removing one or two people from your snaps, but don’t expect it to work on a crowd. We don't find ourselves using the modes too much on daily use, but we appreciate they are there, just in case. The only notable advantage for the Pixel 7 Pro in the performance department is that it comes with 12GB of RAM, rather than the Pixel 7’s 8GB, which we’d say is unlikely to make noticeable difference in day to day use. These aren't major issues but, for us, the biggest downside is just how much here is comparable to the existing Pixel 6. That one is far better value when you compare both side-by-side. We love the Pixel 7 but if you're on a budget at all, the 6 is the way to go. We got ourselves into a nice routine of charging the phone and watch every night and accepted that the dream of a two-day battery wasn’t one that would come true. The 7 Pro's screen is an expansive 6.7 inches, so roughly the same size as the iPhone 14 Plus and Samsung's S23 Ultra. It's crisp and smooth to use – fantastic for scrolling social media, watching YouTube and playing games – though we struggle to wield it with one hand.

It’s great to see the refresh rate goes up to 120Hz (it’s up to 90Hz on the standard 7 and still a measly 60Hz on the iPhone 14) and swiping through our apps and menus is consistently smooth. It feels high-end. You can change both the resolution and the refresh rate in the settings – and lowering them is a good way of saving battery. Compatibility: Make sure to choose a case that's specifically designed for the Pixel 7 to ensure a proper fit and easy access to all ports, buttons, and features. Pixel 6 cases do not fit the Pixel 7, bear that in mind. We've used it to take family photos, product images, portraits and landscape shots in our six months of use – it's never disappointed or produced an unusable image. Because it's more efficient, there is a battery life improvement too. We should say that we never had any issues with the Pixel 6, and the solid battery life on the Pixel 7 is impressive. It's a technically smaller battery, yet still rated to last over 24 hours. Like on the old model, this gets us through a day of normal use with zero issues – and we haven't noticed any major issues after six months. Google says the ultrawide pictures on the selfie camera are “improved” but doesn’t really go into much detail about what that means and in my tests the 10.8MP images looked the same as they did last year. The first use is that the smart case with the SmartBlade attached will serve as a power bank. With 3600 mAh, one fully charged SmartBlade will juice up your battery up to 20 hours! When in need of more battery life, simply snap the SmartBlade on and use your phone as much as you need. The additional battery life will guarantee a whole day of use – enough to come home and charge both devices. In continuation of a good work, Google is now working on their latest series – the Pixel 7 – which will aim to bring more improvements while retaining the good-old affordable price. Among these are the new Tensor 2 chipset, which will boost processing powers of both Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, better displays, improved cameras, etc. Color/design options: Some phone cases only offer one or two color choices, but the fashion-forward ones take add blended colors, textured designs, and customized skins to the mix. We like the look, and our initial fears that it would attract scratches was unfounded – after more than six months of use there are no unwanted marks around the panels or charging ports.
