Over the years our focus has shifted from supporting people who stammer, to include parents, speech & language therapists, teachers and professionals working with those who stammer. Attitudes around stammering, how it's referred to, whether or not it is a disability, whether we should seek a 'cure' — these are the issues that have shaped us.

Building on the success of the Employers Stammering Network, we are now planning the next five years in relation to stammering and work. We will be having a series of meetings to formulate our plans so watch this space of further information. A series of initiatives followed including intensive therapy courses and theatre workshops for children and teenagers who stammer, a series of open days and a BSA National Conference, plus training for speech & language therapists. A pilot mentoring programme. Running for six months, the pilot provided one-to-one mentorship for young people who stammer. I have just realised that thus is the book i have always wanted, or at least since my first ever visit to a UK service station. My husband and I began exploring the UK significantly more last year, when we put in place a self-imposed ban on holidaying abroad to help lower our carbon footprint. This guide would a perfect aide to our adventures! This is a great idea for a book – having just had a baby and with in laws 300 miles away I suspect we’ll be stopping more often on long journeys. And congratulations on the ‘most ethical insurance’ award.

A guide to stammering

This was the first Flux chapter where we didn’t see Joseph Williamson or his tunnels, and there was no sign of Barbara Flynn’s mysterious White Guardian Awsok either. Or Swarm. Boo. Seriously though, cycling along the canal in London without a bell is treacherous so if you sent me one of these you would be improving many peoples quality of life! Anything is better than me weakly saying ‘scuse’ me’, as the angry tourists evilly glance at me sideways muttering to themselves. Sounds an essential aid. I have been using The Good Pub Guide to spot potential stops. It is hard to venture off the motorway, however, when on a long journey so I hope descriptions are enticing.
