The long and demanding ascent of the Col de l’Iseran from the north is 47 km, making it the longest mountain pass in France. However, gradients are moderate with 4% average and 7% max. The road leads you first up to the busy ski resort of Val d’Isère, before entering high-alpine terrain on the last 16 km. You’ll enjoy beautiful views on this, your first high mountain experience of the route. Albeit the moderate gradients, you have to climb 2,000 m to reach the Iseran’s magnificent summit.

Keep an eye out for Beaufortain, as it is a gem - not only for its famous cheese - but even more so for its wild and authentic surroundings, which make it an aberrant area. On top of the Colombière, the pine forests give way for the first time to the picture-book Savoy Alpine pastures. The latter not only being the crossing point to the Maurienne Valley - but also 'The King of the Alps'. The Col de l'Iseran might just be the holy grail for many motorcyclists: it’s the highest paved mountain pass in the Alps, which towers exactly 2.764 metres over sea level. The route crosses the entire French Alps from north to south, taking in 18 high mountain passes (cols). Anything else? The eagle-eyed will have spotted that when the Austrians built a "Europe’s highest road" arch on a parking area, they put on – with touching honesty – a placard displaying its actual height… which is lower than several other famous roads (see Route One). The actual highest bit is at the end of a tunnel on a spur road, where it’d be dangerous to have tourists stopping for pictures. Don’t worry: the route does go there. The last descent is into the Tarentaise valley, one of the two main valleys of Savoie, under the gaze of the Aiguille des Glaciers.

Today, the roads are totally paved and the quality ranges from excellent to patchy. For the most part the road surface is smooth. However, featuring mountain roads there are inevitably going to be some areas that have suffered from freeze thaw action. Is Route des Grandes Alpes open? De noordelijkste etappe van de Route des Grandes Alpes wordt vaak opgedeeld van Thonon-les-Bains aan het Meer van Genève naar naar Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Dit stuk is zo’n 172 km lang. Als je deze etappe in 2 wilt delen, bijvoorbeeld als je de route op de fiets doet, dan kan je Grand Bornand als tussenstop gebruiken. Het eerste deel is dan 80 km en het tweede deel 92 km lang. It tops out at 2.802 m (9,193ft) above the sea level. The route is totally open between June (after the snow has melted) and October. Most of the passes are open at the end of May. But the highest ones – Iseran, Galibier and Izoard – are clear only after mid-June, at the earliest. The highest mountain passes generally close when the first snows arrive. What do I need to know? The four key passes as Gardena, Campolongo, Sella and Pordoi (the highest in the Dolomites, with the most hairpins). This route extends to take in Falzarego, di Giau (my tip for the most beautiful of all), Fedaia in the shadow of the Marmolada, the highest mountain in the range, and San Pelegrino. What do I need to know? It’s a popular, busy pass. Try to avoid riding it at the weekend – and getting there before 10am is definitely recommended. This route lets you do that, then moves on into Switzerland for more great riding. Hou er tijdens de roadtrip rekening mee dat het weer in de bergen snel kan veranderen. The first real challenge is the Col de la Colombière: from the start in Marnaz, a ramp with 11% awaits. When the gradient calms down around Le Reposoir, spare some energy for the upcoming finish of La Colombière, roughly 3 km with 10% in average (especially challenging on hot days).
