About this deal

When the popularity of these Chews grew, they went international and expanded even more. And from time to time, there are even limited edition flavours on sale, too. Jo Barton said: “I used to love driving past the Chewit factory on Virginia Street and smelling strawberry Chewits, it was a tiny slice of heaven and I was gutted when the factory was closed down!”

Michala Leyland said: “I did two summers there as a student. Learnt a lot from an elderly lady called Rose who wanted you to do the best job you could. There was also a woman on the sherbet lemons who’d shout ‘baldies’ when the machine malfunctioned and they came out without a wrapper. Classic. Our original Sour Apple Chews have been joined by the two newer flavours and are available to buy individually. Ice Cream Chewits, originally released in 1989, were re-introduced in 2009 following an online petition. Later, Opal Fruits brought out their own brand of chewits with exciting new flavours [9] and demand expressed on Facebook [10] and Bebo. Cheryl Hindley said: “I too worked at this delicious emporium of filling enducing fabulousness. I had my 16th birthday there and remember other work colleagues clubbing together to present me with a lovely card and a very beautiful silver bracelet. The Leaf UK (Chewits) factory on Virginia Street in Southport on January 10, 2006 Picture by Gareth Jones The sweets are suitable for children, but it is important to supervise them while they enjoy the sweets and ensure that they do not consume too many at once. Some sweets may contain small objects that could pose a choking hazard, so it is important to take appropriate precautions.

The original adverts used Claymation special effects, similar in style to those made famous in the movies of Ray Harryhausen. They also included a voiceover style reminiscent of a 1950s radio serial. Sadly the Leaf UK factory which made Chewits was shut in 2006, with 162 people losing their jobs. Some of the employees had worked there for 40 years. A second advert saw the Muncher being taken around the world to take bites out of famous buildings such as the Taj Mahal and the Empire State Building but none apparently compared to the taste of Chewits. Another campaign saw a parody of the war-time ‘Dig for Victory’ propaganda – can you guess what the strapline was changed to? Yep, that’s it – ‘Chew for Victory’! The land was first occupied by a factory in 1920, and went on to become the Holland’s Toffee factory. In the late 1990s, Chewits experimented with ads showing multiple newscasting dinosaur puppets. The catchphrase advice at the close of each 'broadcast' was to "do it before you chew it". This style of ads was relatively short-lived for Chewits.Michelle Mawdsley said: “My Grandad worked there and lost the end of his finger in a toffee machine. He was an engineer I think. I remember going to a party for the kids once, might have been Christmas.” Denise Lohman said: “My dad worked there in the late 70s and then again in the 80s. He was a shop steward.”

There are many chewy sweets of note from my childhood: Mojos, Fruit Salads, Pacers etc. but Chewits always stand out in my memory because of their really fruity flavours. And they’ve been a firm favourite of children (and adults) for the entirety of their existence as well for, as one of their former slogans went: "No fruit chew chews chewier"! Was it Play to the whistle when it used to be on Saturdays, which used to be sponsored by Lightwater Valley. I found that an odd match.Debbie Church said: “My dad and mum met there. He use to be a foreman and she was a worker. He was 20 years older and had five children. They married and had another six. If it wasn’t for that factory I wouldn’t be here!” Chewits’ extremely fruity flavours and chewy chews is what makes them stand out against other chews on the market. And during their whole existence, they have been a perennial favourite of both children and adults. Across from Mullards, on Rufford Road, there was an engineering company called Bankfield, my dad worked there years ago. He also worked on the old pier train, the Silver Bell. I will ask him if he worked on the manufacture of aeroplanes in Southport. He, my mum and sister emigrated to Canada, where he worked in plane manufacture with De Havilland in Toronto. He worked in different aspects of sheet metal work all his working life.”
