About this deal

Hori have just released Split Pad Pro Attachment Set where you buy the big controllers and a middle bit that makes the Split Pad Pro into a wired controller with a headphone/microphone port. (I haven't seen the middle bit sold separately yet.) Watch out for the Split Pad Fit get sold with this middle bit in the future maybe.

Whether you're in the market for a grip for Switch OLED or the regular Switch, we'd recommend opting for the ZenGrip Pro 3 since it's compatible with both and is available for the same price. Comparing the controllers playing Hollow Knight (Trial of the Fool), it's just way easier on the Pros compared to the others. Some of that may be muscle memory, but trying to hold Y while hitting B with the base of my thumb was a lot more difficult.Funny how they only mention "don't include HD Rumble, NFC an IR camera or wireless functions", but what bugs me the more is gryo control, and they don't say a thing about the controller not having it, like if it was less important. The Split Pad Compact is functionally the same as the Split Pad Pro, so if you're happy with the existing Hori grip, there's really no reason to upgrade. The difference between the two is the size of the controller. The name cues you in on this fact already, but the Split Pad Compact is a trimmed- and slimmed-down iteration on the Split Pad Pro. It offers an entirely different form factor.

The controller is missing a few features found in Joy-Con controllers. It doesn't offer rumble, motion controls, NFC support, or the IR camera. The Split Pad is powered by the Switch console itself, which means it doesn't work when detached from the tablet. The Split Pad Compact is strictly for handheld play, but that's really not a criticism. It does what it sets out to do extremely well. Not that Hori is wrong, they need to print their stuff with what will make them more money, but those I said are so repetitive that its gotten boring already. 20 years ago, eevee, pikachu, charmander, etc were already boring clichés. So yeah, all they needed to do was add a rumble capability to get me to buy one of these, but I guess they are too cheap to do that even. Since the grip has a power bank inside, it is heavier than the other grips on this list. The bulkiness that it adds works in its favor when it comes to ergonomics, though. The increased depth combined with rounded handles makes the Switch more comfortable to hold for longer play sessions. As the main draw here is extended playtime, that's certainly a good thing.
