About this deal

Don’t overthink it. I believe many of us get caught up in the right or wrongs inherent of this community but a lot of it is really subtle differences that quite frankly you might not notice when typing daily. I’m all for paying attention to the details (hence my own journey into the lube world) but don’t feel obligated to use this or that just because so and so says so. Honestly, it’s pretty hard to screw this up so long as you’re using one of the above mentioned lubricants. Independently tested and confirmed for LOX and GOX use by major oxygen manufacturers and test authorities, including BAM.

Yes. Krytox™ oils and greases have been used to lubricate plastic and elastomer components for more than 60 years. For more specific information, please refer to the Krytox™ Lubricants Plastics and Elastomer Compatibility document. Let’s start with why we lube switches. Often a switch will come prelubed from the factory but only with a small amount that is sloppily applied to the stem legs. This may be all fine and well for the uninitiated but if we’re going to take the time to build a custom board we may as well do it right. While Krytox™ grease will not react with the other greases or cause decomposition or any hazardous reactions, it will not stop the other lubricant from breaking down from heat and oxidation. Therefore, it is not recommended to mix Krytox™ lubricants with any non-perfluoropolyether (PFPE) oil or grease. Characteristics of Krytox™ Performance Lubricants The thing to remember is that evenness is the name of the game when lubricating your switches with 205 grade 0. It's always easier to add lube than to remove lube, so don't hesitate to experiment with different amounts of 205g0 on a few of your switches to find out what you like best. Once you've found out, rinse and repeat, consistently. Tips on Using Krytox 205 Grade 0 effectively Basically, the 20Xs are greases, and the 10Xs are oils, the higher the end number the higher the viscosity. Krytox is a type of grease/oil and is produced by DuPoint (Original Creator) and Miller which is generally considered as superior to DuPoint and is most well know for their Tribosys 3203/3204 lines of lube, the main vendor for this is SwitchMod (Krelbit). 205G0 is usually preferred for linear, Grade 2 is the standard and has a peanut butter like consistency, Grade 00 is near semi fluid and I would recommend against this as it can actually separate in near room temperature environments. There's also Grade 0s which is basically an oil. The 10x range are oils and then 20x range are all greases. The most common greases and oils used in our community seem to be 104, 106, 203, 204, and 205. You will often see, especially 205, with a g0 on the end. This stands for Grade 0 which changes the consistency of the grease. Grade 0 being quite a smooth consistency and the higher grades becoming more like a peanut butter consistency. Don’t assume, but most vendors sell 205g0. If they don’t specify, then ask, but you probably want Grade 0. Okay, so which one should I use? In time, Krytox GPL 205 grade 0 tends to separate slightly--you'll see a little coat of oil on top of the 205G0 grease. This is why you always want to shake well or mix your Krytox 205 grade 0 on a palette to give it its best integrity.

The feel of this switch is quite smooth throughout of course due to the lube job, but as someone who prefers double-stage springs, sometimes I did feel that the switch felt a little bit slower than I would have wanted, but unfortunately, that is just the nature of single-stage springs. I would also like to point out that while the lube job is very consistent across all my switches, some might say that there is too much lube making it feel a bit mushy compared to other switches that you might have lubed yourself. If you aren’t a fan of the lube job, it could be quite a hassle to have to clean off each switch and lube them yourself, so I would have also liked to have seen a dry version of the Moon V2s sold for those who want to do it themselves.

Different Krytox™ oils have specific properties that make them well-suited for the demands of particular industries or environments. The family of Krytox™ oils includes: No. Krytox™ oils and greases do not contain any silicones, and no silicone is used in the manufacturing process. Switch lubricating can sound scary but in reality is quite simple and makes a huge difference in both feel and sound!

Certain switches have more stem wobble and looser housings than others--you might want to add switch films to help with these issues during your lubing process. If you have any other suggestions for how to lube switches I’d love to hear them. The brushing process is pretty time consuming so if there’s another way to do it without sacrificing accuracy I’m all ears! Alright, I’m sold, but where do I buy these lubricants?Dirt is one of a bearing’s worst enemies. Debris, anti-rust preservatives, and other residues limit lubricity, which can result in failures. Proper bearing preparation and use of high-quality lubricants, such as Krytox™ performance lubricants, can reduce facility downtime and maintenance costs.

Krytox™ lubricants can be used in applications where nonflammability, oxygen compatibility, materials compatibility, high-temperature stability, and resistance to aggressive chemicals are requirements. Industries include:

You’ll notice that I specified just the switch housing and stems. The spring is a whole other matter. Personally I have found that a heavier lubricant is preferable to dampen any spring noises but just about anything can be used. As a general rule of thumb, lower viscosity lubricants are used on tactile switches, whereas higher viscosity lubricants are used on linear switches. This is often desirable because you don’t want to cover up the tactility of a tactile switch. You want to keep that exposed while smoothing away some imperfections. On the other hand, a linear switch may not have as much character as a tactile switch and perhaps you might feel the imperfections a bit more as well, and so often you want a very smooth experience while not worrying too much about masking the original switch qualities.
