About this deal

The minor characters are another delight. I especially enjoy Bramble, the dryad, who is very fond of Tobias and has an undryadlike propensity not to settle down into a single tree. And Silver’s mother is rather wonderful, though I’m just as pleased not to be related to her. She is a folklorist of a more practical bent than Silver, who knows her son better than he thinks, and not as well as perhaps she needs to. When we become uprooted, we must put down strong new roots. Containing exceptional nature magic, Emily Tesh's lyrically abstract prose reaches out like tree branches and draws you ever further into a fairytale esque dream. Not strange as the captivating cover lead me to believe, the novella presented me with a darkly whimsical treat. Lovely and queer, Silver in the Wood's emotionally heavy plot rushed along like a babbling brook. A story of secrets, reflection, and rebirth drew to a close with one of the most gorgeous endings I've ever read. It’s OK! I know it looks impossible in the middle, but they will both be fine, honest! And the ending is super sweet and will make you happy.

The Greenhollow Duology - Emily Tesh

I utterly adored Emily Tesh’s Silver in the Wood. That’s it. That’s the whole review. What? You need more? Alright, then…

Silver in the Wood is a light, atmospheric, slow burn romance between a cursed man and the younger man who teaches him that life can be more. Tobias Finch lives hidden away in Greenhollow Wood. He has his quiet existence with his cat and his dryads in his secret cottage. He’s not a people person and he keeps to himself – which is simple considering he can refocus the woods around him to keep people away. Two years after the events of the first story, Silver has become the new Wild Man of the Woods, and Tobias has ended their romantic relationship. Tobias now works for Mrs. Silver. One day, Henry receives a letter from his mother; she is investigating the disappearance of Maud Lindherst, who has been kidnapped by a vampire. Silver agrees to help. Tobias does figure it out eventually, but one gets the sense that he is not in the habit of thinking of new things and his thoughts move with the slowness of old sap when their direction is unfamiliar.)

Somewhere in Greenhollow there is a cottage home to Tobias Finch, unbeknownst to the outside world as the Wild Man gracing storybooks and myths. I rated this down mainly due to the latter half of the plot, which starts to loose its way a little bit when Fabian is introduced. As an omnipotent threat he's menacing and malevolent, but the confrontation with him feels a little overwrought and silly. If anything, I would have forgone this section for more stories of Tobias and Mrs Winter on their travels. They're a very unlikely duo of supernatural crime fighters, and I would have devoured all of their antics. A true story of the woods, of the fae, and of the heart. Deep and green and wonderful.”— New York Times bestselling author Naomi Novik Silver in the Wood might not be an epic novel with battles over the fate of the entire world but it's consuming, haunting and so so beautiful. If you are looking for a short read to dive into, to do away with the real world and experience a little magic then I definitely recommend Silver in the Wood. Silver went off to sleep in Tobias’s bed in Tobias’s shirt, and Pearl treacherously went and joined him, so Tobias sat alone by the fire, not sleeping. As it burned lower and lower, the rain died down to a drizzle, and then it quieted and there was only the gentle drip-drip from the leaves of the old oak tree behind the cottage. Tobias took up a newly sharpened knife and trimmed his fingernails. He’d meant to do it earlier, but then Silver had been there. Afterwards he swept up the scattered dry curls of dead leaves and tossed them on the embers.Silver in the Wood reads like a forest fairytale. It could be seen like a loose m/m retelling of the Green Man myths, so it's fitting that this is a story about rebirth and reawakening, not only of nature after spring but of people after toxic relationships.

Silver and Tobias have the instant rapport that comes from two lonely people discovering an unexpected connection with one another. Tobias brings an aura of calm and patience to Silver’s boundless energy and eagerness. They fit in just the way that Fabian, the villain of the piece, does not. Perhaps once he and Tobias did fit, or perhaps they both pretended they did, but those days are long since passed. The Greenhollow Duology is a series of two fantasy romance novellas by Emily Tesh. The first entry in the series, Silver in the Wood, won the 2020 World Fantasy Award for Best Novella. From a sweet cat, to a protective dryad, to a practical folklorist, to walking evil, many brave, fiendish souls traipsed Green Hallow. Even though I wished for a bit more to the characters themselves, the unique personalities fit perfectly with and within the fantastical tale. First off, as someone who knew nothing about the Green Man and is completely unfamiliar with any Green Man lore which I’m told this book is a retelling of, Tobias pretty much reads as Lorax. When you tell me that he speaks for the trees, my orange friend is the blueprint. But, at the plot’s climax, there is a point where Tobias realizes that he loves Henry. I felt like his feelings came out of nowhere. It didn’t feel like it had really built to that point. I’ve read plenty of queer books where the romance is nearly undetectable, and they hit harder than Silver in the Wood. I can’t really pinpoint exactly why I felt like this. But, I felt like we missed out on any real build up of feelings between the two characters. It just sort of happened.Thank you, said the young man, and once Tobias had taken it off him—it was a damn good coat, even Tobias could tell that, the kind so perfectly tailored it required a servant to pour you into it and peel you out again—he saw that his new guest really was soaked through.
