Available in white, grey or rose gold, the head vibrates with 40,000 sonic pulses per minute and left our mouth feeling noticeably clean. It has four brushing modes designed for cleaning, whiting, sensitive teeth and a gum massage, and a nice, slim handle with a grippy, rubber feel. All the same, while the action feels a little rough and rattly in comparison to the brand’s more expensive models, it still gives your gnashers a thorough clean, which you can tailor by switching out the CrossAction brush head for a Sensitive or Precision Clean head. While the bristle heads remain the same, the new magnetic iO drive system transfers motor energy directly to the bristle tips.
However, our gums in particular felt noticeably healthier using this brush and we reckon we’re in line for some serious praise at our next dentist visit. The pressure sensors and coloured indicator ring help you apply just the right amount of pressure and keep track of a typical two-minute session. This makes it easy to switch between brushing modes and even gives you a well-deserved (and curiously satisfying) smiley face when you’ve brushed well.Most importantly, though, this is a big step up in cleaning from manual brushes or cheaper battery models, and you can kit out the whole family without breaking the bank. There are even five settings including whitening, cleaning, sensitive, polish and massage as definitive proof you don’t need to spend more on a toothbrush unless you really want to. To check battery life, we also leave the toothbrush running while standing up and time how long it takes for the battery to run down. It’s not always practical to charge an electric toothbrush if you don’t have a shaving socket and don’t want to bring your toothbrush out of the bathroom.
It’s not clear that all of these make a huge amount of difference, but having a slower, gentler mode that you can switch to a faster, more intense mode can be useful when you’re getting used to a new brush. We then divide this figure by the four minutes per day brushing recommended by dentists to get an accurate idea of how many days and weeks a single charge should last.We test all electric toothbrushes by using them twice a day over a period of at least one week, making sure we get a feel for how they handle and perform when cleaning.
Working with the app, you can track your brushing routine and – with the sensors on the more expensive Oral-B smart brushes – make sure that you’re reaching every corner of your mouth. Philips has effectively built its Sonicare tech into a brush just 20cm long and weighing only 34g, and the grippy, moulded handle packs neatly into a minimalist travel case. You can enjoy a fantastic, in-depth clean, but you’re not getting all the noise and head vibration that often comes with it. If none of these tips help, you make use of the two-year manufacturer’s warranty on your Oral-B toothbrush. These bring in the 3D action, with micro vibrations, oscillation and rotation for a better clean, along with pressure alerts and a lithium-ion battery (on most models).
What’s more, you can use the iO Series 4 with the Oral-B app and track your dental routine from day to day and week to week. The single AAA battery keeps it going for up to 90 days, although Philips also sells a more expensive rechargeable version that boosts the cleaning power and boasts a 30-day battery life.
